Blog Post 4: the Museum of the Moving Image
This was my second time going to the Museum of the Moving Image, although my first time was more about the psychology behind it. Therefore, revisiting the museum allowed me a new view of the exhibit. My group mainly focused on the 3rd floor of the museum, where there was a history of the cameras, moving image tools, and sound production. There we learned more about optical toys such as thaumatrope and zoetrope, how these devices opened up a new possibility on the perception of motion. Moving on, we observed different cameras used in the past and their safety level as well as the popularity. We mainly focused on the television cameras and learned the difference between film and television camera. Then we experienced sound production, about how dubbing works and music choices make the different mood of the scene. We also visited special effects section and learned about 3 main methods of special effects, which are mechanical, optical, and digital. I was surprised to see that huge spaceship in the film was actually a small wooden model with light bulbs attached. Although we could not visit every section of the museum, 3rd floor alone taught me a lot about film production, how scientific and elaborated it is.
